Porto has good sushi now, but the city does not have one obvious answer for every night. The right choice depends on where you are staying, how much patience you have for booking, and whether you want a proper counter dinner or just a decent Japanese meal without turning the evening into admin.
For a serious omakase night, start with Hikari Omakase. For Matosinhos, look at Rino. In Gaia, CRU Sushi Bar is the small counter to check. Around Bonfim, Izakaya Japanese Cuisine is the more convenient planned dinner.
Check current hours, menus and booking rules before you go. Sushi places in Porto change quietly, and small counters do not care that your spreadsheet said Tuesday was perfect.
Start with the map
This matters more than people expect. Porto city, Matosinhos and Gaia are close, but dinner logistics are not the same.
- Porto city is easiest if you are staying in Baixa, Bonfim, Cedofeita or near Campanhã.
- Matosinhos makes sense if your day already includes the beach, fish restaurants or the coast.
- Gaia works when CRU is the plan. Canidelo is not the same thing as finishing a wine tasting beside the river and wandering in.
If the weather is wet, if you are dressed for a long dinner, or if the booking is late, budget for a taxi or ride-share. Porto hills are charming until your shoes start arguing.

Hikari Omakase
Area: Praça Marquês de Pombal, north of Baixa.
Use it for: a serious counter dinner, special occasion, small group, or a night where you want the chef to control the rhythm.
Hikari is the polished omakase choice in Porto. It is not a casual roll-and-beer stop near the hotel. The point is the counter format: a sequence of pieces and small dishes, with the meal built around product, rice, timing and restraint.
That also means it is not cheap. MAGG reported an average menu price of €155 excluding drinks in February 2026, so treat this as a planned dinner, not a last-minute hunger solution.

Rino
Area: Matosinhos.
Use it for: sushi when your day already points towards Matosinhos, the beach or seafood streets.
Rino is the Matosinhos option I would compare before defaulting back to Porto city. It is useful because Matosinhos already pulls people west for the beach, fish restaurants and a flatter, easier evening. If you are staying in the centre only for two nights, it may be too much effort. If you are already out there, it can fit neatly.
Do not assume Matosinhos means zero planning. Check opening days and recent photos before you commit, especially if the whole evening depends on it.

CRU Sushi Bar
Area: Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia.
Use it for: a small Gaia counter dinner when you are happy to plan transport both ways.
CRU is the one to check if you want Gaia rather than Porto city. The important detail is location. Canidelo is coastal Gaia, not the riverfront wine-lodge zone. That is not a problem, but it changes the night. Treat it as a separate dinner plan, not an afterthought after Port tastings.
The room is small, so booking matters. If the night is built around CRU, confirm the reservation and transport before you start adding romantic ideas to the evening. Romantic ideas are cheap. Getting stranded after dinner is not.

Izakaya Japanese Cuisine
Area: Bonfim, Porto.
Use it for: a planned Japanese dinner that stays convenient for central Porto.
Izakaya is the practical Porto-city pick in this list. It is easier to fit around Bonfim, Baixa or Campanhã than the Matosinhos and Canidelo options, and it suits a proper dinner better than a quick snack. If you are staying nearby, this is the one that creates the least transport drama. That is not glamorous, but after a long Porto day it can be the difference between a good dinner and a long negotiation with tired legs.

This is not a ranking by review count. Review counts reward busy places, old listings and people who photograph soy sauce like evidence. Look at recent photos, booking rules, room size and whether the menu matches the night you want.

- Confirm whether the menu is omakase, tasting menu, à la carte or mixed.
- Book small counters earlier than you think.
- Match the restaurant to your area. Sushi is not improved by a wet uphill walk after midnight.
For most visitors, one good sushi night is enough. If you want the strongest Porto food memories, balance it with local Porto food, a simple seafood lunch in Matosinhos, and maybe one glass somewhere from the wine bar guide.
My plain answer: choose Hikari for the special counter, Rino for Matosinhos, CRU for a small Gaia plan, and Izakaya when you want Japanese food without turning dinner into a transport project.
