Bonfim is not a polished “new Porto” district; it is an old residential area where new cafés sit beside workshops, churches, older apartment blocks and everyday errands. I like it because you can have a good coffee and a proper lunch here without turning the day into a tourist route.
Start with coffee at Combi
Combi Coffee on Rua do Morgado de Mateus 29 roasts its own coffee. I stop there when I want to taste the coffee rather than sit through a long brunch. It is open daily on its official site; check the day’s hours before going.
A short walk with actual stops
From Combi, head toward Jardim de São Lázaro, one of the older small gardens in this part of town. Continue east toward Campo 24 de Agosto or south toward Igreja do Bonfim. The church is open for visits around its services; check the Visit Porto listing rather than assuming the doors are open whenever you pass.
For a traditional lunch: A Cozinha do Manel
A Cozinha do Manel, at Rua do Heroísmo 215, is a proper sit-down northern Portuguese restaurant. The dishes to ask about are the roast cabrito and the house’s pataniscas; the menu changes, so ask what is being served that day. Visit Portugal’s listing has the address and current service details. I would make this the main meal, not squeeze it between two coffee stops.
Parque das Águas, if you have time
Parque das Águas is a good reason to come farther into Bonfim: a shaded heritage park connected with Porto’s water system. It is open to the public, but weather or maintenance can close parts of it; check the official visitor information before making the detour.
Would I live here?
Possibly, if the exact street and commute worked. Bonfim is close to central Porto, but the housing stock varies sharply: renovated flats beside older buildings, busy roads beside quieter blocks. Visit the address at commute time and again at night; check damp, window insulation, traffic and the walk to your Metro stop. A Sunday coffee tells you very little about weekday noise.
That is my Bonfim day: coffee at Combi, a walk through São Lázaro or the church, then lunch at Cozinha do Manel. Add Parque das Águas only if you have time to give it its own visit.
