Do not try to “do the shopping streets” in one sweep. Porto is hilly, shops keep different hours, and Santa Catarina is a different outing from the small labels around Bombarda. Pick what you need, then walk that area properly.
For everyday shops: Santa Catarina
Rua de Santa Catarina is the straightforward high street: chain clothes shops, shoes, cafés and the ViaCatarina mall. Start around Bolhão and walk south toward Batalha. It is busy and not especially local, but when you need a charger, shoes or ordinary clothes, that is useful rather than a flaw.
For independent shops: Cedofeita and Bombarda
Walk west along Rua de Cedofeita, then branch into Rua do Rosário and the Miguel Bombarda art quarter. For contemporary womenswear, A LINE is at number 519; for pre-owned designer clothes and vintage objects, Numero237 is at number 237. Check their own hours before going. The Bombarda directory shows which other shops and galleries are currently open.
Centro Comercial Bombarda at number 285 is a good wander when you want several smaller design, jewellery, clothing and art shops in one building. It is not a conventional mall, and opening hours can differ by shop.
For Porto-made gifts
A Vida Portuguesa in the south wing of São Bento station is a convenient place to browse Portuguese-made soaps, stationery, textiles, ceramics and packaged food. Claus Porto, at Rua das Flores 22, is the more focused stop for the brand’s soaps and fragrances. Both are gift shops rather than low-cost basics; compare the price with what you are happy to carry home.
A walk that makes sense
For a first afternoon, do Santa Catarina and Bolhão together. Save Cedofeita and Bombarda for a separate slow walk, with a coffee break and time to look in the galleries. Use the Cedofeita map to orient yourself, but expect a climb and wear shoes you can manage on wet paving.
My rule is simple: Santa Catarina for errands, Cedofeita and Bombarda for browsing, São Bento and Rua das Flores for gifts. Check a shop’s hours before crossing town for it; independent places do not all open on the same schedule.
