Gourmet Shops in Porto: Cheese, Tinned Fish, Wine and Gifts

Gourmet food shop in Porto with cheese tinned fish wine and local products

For food gifts in Porto, I would make two stops rather than buying the first glossy hamper on Rua das Flores. Casa Januário is a proper mercearia on Rua do Bonjardim; Mercado do Bolhão is where I go to compare fresh produce and ask stallholders what is good now.

Casa Januário for a cupboard-sized Porto

At Casa Januário, look at the shelves of conservas and patês, olive oil and vinegar, biscuits, chocolate, spices, cheese and cured meats. It is on Rua do Bonjardim 348–352, a short walk from the centre. I ask staff to point out a Portuguese producer or something they would actually keep at home, then choose one or two things rather than buying a box just because it is wrapped nicely. Check its current hours before you go; it closes Sunday.

Bolhão for what is in season

Bolhão is better for fruit, vegetables, fish, bread and cheese than for a pre-packed souvenir. Walk the floor, ask what is local or in season, and buy only what you can keep or eat. The market floor closes Sunday, and its hours differ from the restaurants inside, so check the official page. Open Bolhão in Google Maps.

What travels well

Sealed tins, biscuits, chocolate, spices and unopened bottles are easier gifts than fresh fish, soft cheese or anything that needs refrigeration. If you are flying with jam, pâté or soft cheese, treat it as a liquid for security purposes. Porto Airport says screening equipment and rules can differ between checkpoints, so check its current liquids guidance on the day you pack instead of relying on a generic 100 ml summary.

Customs rules depend on where you are going. Check your destination’s official customs site before buying meat, dairy, fresh produce or other restricted foods, and declare items when required. For U.S.-bound travel, start with U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s food guidance.

My easy apartment dinner is bread, a tin of fish, olives, tomatoes and something from the bakery. My easy gift is one good tin and a bar of chocolate. Both beat carrying home a bag of things that looked better than they tasted.
