Campanhã in Porto: Trains, Changes and When to Stay Nearby

Campanha area in Porto with railway and neighbourhood buildings

Campanhã is where many people first meet Porto with a suitcase in hand. It is a working transport district, not the postcard centre, and that is exactly why it can be useful. The mistake is booking a room here because it looks close on a map without checking how you will get back after dinner.

First, check which station is on your ticket

Porto Campanhã is the main rail interchange for long-distance trains and several regional routes. São Bento is the central station with the famous tile hall. They are connected by CP urban trains, but do not assume your train leaves from the station that is most convenient for sightseeing. Read the station name on your ticket and check the CP journey planner on the day.

The Terminal Intermodal de Campanhã (TIC) is the long-distance bus terminal beside the station area. Bus operators do not all use the same stop elsewhere in Porto; follow the address on your ticket, not a remembered pick-up point.

Getting into the centre with bags

The Metro station is connected to the transport hub, and the city centre is a short ride away. For São Bento, CP’s urban train can be the simplest connection when the next departure suits you; for Baixa, Trindade or another address, check the Metro route. With a heavy suitcase, I take a taxi or ride service rather than turning a transfer into a hill-and-cobblestone workout. Check live departures before choosing between them.

Should you sleep nearby?

I would stay near Campanhã if I had a very early train, arrived late, was travelling onwards the next morning or needed to be on the east side. For a first weekend built around dinner, bars and walking between sights, I would usually stay nearer Baixa, Bolhão or Cedofeita. Before booking, check the exact street, the walk from the station at the time you will arrive, and what is open for food nearby. “Campanhã” covers more than the station entrance.

If you have a few hours

For football or a museum visit, Estádio do Dragão and the FC Porto Museum are the straightforward nearby choice; check match and museum schedules before going. For green space, Parque de São Roque has a romantic garden and a boxwood maze. Casa São Roque is a separate art-and-architecture visit nearby, but its exhibitions and opening days change, so check its site before making the trip. These are east-side stops, not a quick walk from Ribeira.

My rule is simple: Campanhã is a good base when the train is the point of the night. If the city centre is the point, sleep there and come through Campanhã only when your ticket says to.
